I’m glad you found my blog. So why the name
Adventurous Midlifer? There’s no long story, or profound
answer as to how I became the Adventurous Midlifer.
Rather it simply is how I view my self.
I am a midlife black women over 50 who has an insatiable
need to travel. From my first trip to backpack Guatemala
in the early 90’s to 2022 when I began living my dream of
traveling full-time 365 days a year!
A word I constantly heard from people as I recounted my
travels was “wow your adventurous”. When we think of
the word “Adventurous”, we usually have visions of some
20 something year old white guy bungee jumping off a
cliff of death.
But being Adventurous is simply about each persons.
willingness to step outside their comfort zone to try new
ideas and experiences. So I am the “Adventurous
Midlifer” literally and figuratively.
I’m just a sista born and raised on the Lower East
Side of New York City. I am the mother of 28 year
old twins (boy/girl) that I raised in the suburbs of
Atlanta Georgia.
I’ve been traveling since the late 80’s before the
internet and cell phones, so I travel, travel! This
need for travel was planted during my early solo
adventures as I traveled to Countries that the
average American wasn’t traveling to (before it
became popular).
Like most people, COVID was a period of serious
self reflection. I realized that tomorrow is not
promised and if we sit around saying “tomorrow”,
we will look up and it will be too late.
So with the blessing of my employer, I set out to
do what I’ve wanted to do for 20 years! I became a FA
digital nomad and full time traveler.
Why did you choose Adventurous Midlifer?
Well first, I am a midlifer (over 50) so that’s where midlifer comes from. I chose adventurous because it described me and my desire to try something new by launching Adventurous Midlifer. Adventurous is defined as; someone who is willing to step out there and try something new, and take risks. This describes not just me but any midlifer who is transitioning to a new phase in their lives, whether that is retirement, being an empty nester, getting a divorce, becoming a grandmother or starting a business.
What type of traveler are you?
I am a curious, adventurous and solo traveler. I love different cultures, hiking, scuba diving, night markets and visiting locations that a less touristy.
Do you travel alone or with a group?
99% of the time I travel alone. I am a bit of a loner and enjoy traveling solo, but would not be adverse to group travel.
